A MUM-OF-TWO has launched a crowdfunding campaign to save a Dawlish play centre.
The Monkey House, in Brunswick Place, is set to close unless the cash can be found to take over the lease.
The current operators are moving away from the area so unless the campaign can raised £12,500 by February 17, the centre will have to close.
Mum Louise Kendal, who has lived in the area all her life, says the play cafe offers a ‘lifeline’ for those with young children and crucial employment for local people.
Her crowdfunding campaign is looking for pledges to help secure a new lease and make improvements with the aim of relaunching and rebranding in the spring.
Louise said: ‘The Monkey House has been part of the local community for nearly 10 years and the risk of it closing is a blow to all of those who use is as well as those who work there.
‘Dawlish is a beautiful seaside town with thousands of annual visitors coming during the summer months so for those employed in year-round positions, it provides a lifeline.
‘Dawlish is a growing community with significant recent growth from housing developments and more scheduled soon.
‘Teignmouth does not have a soft play centre so there is ample local trade.’
The lease expires on March 24 and a new lease is being offered on a five-year term initially .
The current business and equipment is up for sale.
Louise hopes to decorate, replace fixtures and fittings and has a number of ideas to bring in new trade.
She said: ‘I am hoping we can keep the Monkey House going, continuing to offer a local and affordable play cafe for little ones while employing local people.
‘I have many ideas on how to increased trade and hope that my passion and determination is evident.’
To proceed, Louise needs to hit 100 per cent of the crowdfunding target
Pledges of support do not buy a share of the business but and offer of rewards such as annual passes.
