Two men have pleaded not guilty to a robbery at a shop where a cashier was allegedly sprayed with a noxious chemical.

Paul Rowntree and Rikki Ward both appeared before Judge Geoffrey Mercer, QC, at Exeter Crown Court accused of robbery and inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent.

Rowntree, aged 36, of Dawlish, and Ward, aged 28, of Sunderland, both denied the charges.

They are accused of attacking shop assistant Neil Warner with a chemical and robbing the Costcutter store in The Strand, Dawlish, of £5,129.90 on January 30 this year.

The judge set a timetable for the progress of the case and remanded both men in custody.
