A Dawlish businesswoman has braved the elements to take part in a gruelling TV survival show.
Karen Bretagne, who with husband Bernard owns Gerald’s supermarkets in Dawlish and Dawlish Warren, is taking part in the fourth series of The Island with Bear Grylls.
Filming of the reality show took place last year on a remote, uninhabited island in the Pacific, off the coast of Panama, where participants are tested on their survival skills.
The 16 contestants, who are complete strangers, are left entirely alone, filming themselves, and with only the clothes they were wearing and some basic tools and training.
Karen, who is no stranger to appearing on TV having taken part in ITV’s Lorraine Kelly’s bikini diet challenge, said husband Bernard had also wanted to take part.
She said: ‘It was actually my husband who wanted to take part, having watched every series.
‘I jumped on the bandwagon and said I can do it too.
‘So we both applied and I got the gig.’
When asked what was the best advice she was given by Bear, Karen said: ‘He said it will be the ones who are mentally strong who will survive the experience and I didn’t realise just how strong my mind is.
‘I was hoping to calm my mind to be honest as it’s been work, work, work for so long, I thought it would be a break, how daft is that?’
The first episode airs on Channel 4 this Sunday at 9pm with the second episode on Monday, also at 9pm.
The participants will be abandoned on the island and this time the programme will discover what happens when two groups, one younger and one older, are pushed to the limits of human endurance.
