LIB DEM Alan Connett romped to victory in the Exminster and Haldon ward leaving Tory Kevin Lake trailing in his wake.

With a majority of more than 600 votes, he promised to continue to ‘give the community a voice’.

He said: ‘It’s been hard work, it really has, for this election and for the 20 years I have been a councillor.

‘We must focus on issues local people are talking about day in day out whether that is school cuts or potholes.

‘I will try to do my very best to represent them at county level.

‘My aim is to give the community a voice and I will carry on doing that.’

He expressed his sadness that fellow Lib Dem Richard Younger-Ross lost his seat.

Cllr Connett, who is leader of the Lib Dem county group, said: ‘He has been an excellent member of my team.’

He also congratulated incoming Lib Dem Jackie Brodie who won the Newton Abbot north seat, taken from the Tories who had won it with controversial member Eve Barisic who later moved to France.

Cllr Connett said: ‘I am thrilled Jackie ended the situation of an absentee councillor and the town now has two good councillors with Gordon Hook.

‘We need to focus now on being a strong opposition at county hall.’
