YOUNG Dawlish-based underwater hockey players have triumphed in a national competition held in Leeds.
TSW under-12s team sent four teams to the John Charles Aquatic Centre in Yorkshire and a contingent of under-16s who teamed up with Plymouth players for the day to compete in the Underwater Hockey Championships.
Pride of place went to the gold medal-winning under-12 squad while other teams won two silvers and a bronze.
An 8-0 win over Orkney got the under-12s up and running, when they defeated North Stars 6-0 and Team South East vanquished 3-1.
The halfway stage in the group of eight, nine minute matches was a 2-1 win over Batley side North Poles, the win coming in the final 30 seconds.
Orkney (7-0) and North Stars (5-0) were beaten a second time which meant a won over Team South East would win the tournament with a game to spare. It ended 1-1.
TSW’s then hopes of a national title rested with either beating or drawing with North Poles, still smarting from the prior defeat. Three minutes from time, TSW went 2-1 up which set up a frantic finale.
Both teams made goal line clearances before TSW sealed the deal with a third goal.
The under-18 side – Louis Pyper, Elliott Wilkinson, Oliver Curle, Kieran Tucker, Laurence Ashworth, Gemma Morgan and Alice Nuttall – were third in their competition.
TSW under-16s were beaten into second place by Xafira from Manchester in their age group.
The under-14s were in a tough group and opened with a 3-0 win over Plymouth.
Next came Orkney and a Team South East, both of whom they overcame comfortably.
Batley held TSW to a 1-1 draw in a dress rehearsal for the final later that day.
A last-minute goal gave Batley victory and sent TSW home with silver.
